Item No.: 9745 Price : SOLD
Item : SCARCE EVANS REPEATING RIFLE TRANSITIONAL MODEL, .44 EVANS CF
Description :
Here is an original Evans Repeating Rifle manufactured in Mechanic Falls, Maine and chambered for the .44 Evans Centerfire cartridge. The Evans is notable for a couple reasons. It was the only mass produced forearm manufactured in the state of Maine and it had the highest magazine capacity of any US mass produced firearm. An Evans held 34 cartridges! This is a transitional Evans with a 26" octagonal barrel. It was made about 1876. The transitional Evans added a lower wooden piece to the butt, with the round rotary magazine visible between the upper and lower pieces of the butt. This rifle is in very good condition. The receiver has traces of blue remaining in protected areas with an overall smooth brown patina. The barrel retains about 90% of its factory blued finish. The trigger, lever, and hammer appear to have been nickeled with about 30% remaining. The mechanism seems to be in working order. The bore is dark with some pitting, but the rifling is strongly visible along the barrel's length. The stock is in very good condition. There is a repair to the forearm at the barrel channel on the right side just behind the nose cap. The gun has an iron nose cap which is not typically seen on an Evans. This is a nice old Evans, a unique American Rifle. Stock no. 27257
