Item No.: 9729 Price : SOLD
Item : RARE SWISS FELDSTUTZER 1851 PERCUSSION SERVICE RIFLE, 10.5MM
Description :
This is an original Swiss "Eidgenössischer Stutzer 1851" or "Federal Carbine 1851" manufactured by "Bachelard a Morges". Also known as the Feldstutzer 1851, this was the first service rifle procured by the Federal Government for use by the Swiss military. Under the newly adopted 1848 federal constitition, the government was responsible for arming the Cantonal Troops. The Feldstutzer was also the first European arm to use a smaller bullet, with a diameter of 10.5mm (about .41 caliber). Many were converted to breech loaders in 1867. This is a Marksman's rifle with a 32" barrel, double set triggers, a schuetzen style buttplate, and an advanced rear sight. It is in very fine condition with an overall smooth brown patina on the barrel. Someone has carded some of this patina along the top of the barrel in an attempt to clean it. The lock, butt, and trigger guard have a mottled steel/brown patina. The mechanics work very well. I don't have a bore light that will fit down this barrel, but what bore I can see is in fine condition. The stock is in very fine condition as well. It is made from a beautiful piece of European walnut with some exceptional figure in the butt. The 1851 Feldstutzer is a rare gun, especially in its original percussion configuration. This is a very nice example. Stock no. 27300
