SUPERB U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1898 KRAG-JORGENSEN RIFLE, .30-40 GOVT.

This is an original, U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured in 1900 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 330,000 were made between 1898 and 1903. The M1898 Krag had the the shortest service life of any U.S. arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 5 years after production began. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. This rifle is in excellent condition, one of the finest I have ever had. It retains about 98% of its original factory blued finish, with just a few tiny scratches on the nose cap. The receivers on these rifles were oil quenched, leaving a mottled black finish. There is some light wear on the rear sight. There are a few small specks on the butt plate. The bolt remains armory bright and the extractor retains its fire blued finish. The rifle has an excellent bore and mechanics. The stock is excellent as well with a crisp cartouche on the left side of the wrist. Included is an original brass sight/muzzle protector. This is a superb example of the Krag. They are increasingly hard to find in this condition. Stock no. 27171
