Item :	NAPOLEONIC WARS AUSTRIAN MODEL 1784 FLINTLOCK MUSKET, .75 CALIBER

This is an original, Austrian Model 1784 Flintlock Musket of about .75 caliber. Austria was a major combatant in the Napoleonic Wars. From 1792 until 1815 Austria fought against Napoleon, being beaten several times and forced into unfavorable peace terms with France. Austria declared war on France at least five times during this period, finally siding with the British and participating in the final battle at Waterloo. Austria emerged victorious but severely weakened by the years of war. The Model 1784 was the standard Austrian Infantry musket through most of the Napoleonic era. This musket was in the collection of George C. Neumann, author of "Battle Weapons of the American Revolution". His collection tags remain on the butt. The gun is in very good condition with an overall mottled steel patina over-speckled with dark brown. The butt is a solid dark brown. The lock mechanism works well with a very heavy main spring. These locks had a removeable pan. The touch hole on this barrel is located at the front of the pan and angled forward. The pan has been shaped to better feed the touch hole. The gun's bore is dark and heavily pitted. The stock has a number of small dings and scratches from years of use. There are some small very old chips along the barrel and ramrod channels and one at the bottom of the lock mortise. The musket retains its original steel ramrod. Austrian flintlocks of the Napoleonic era are quite scarce. Stock no. 26899
