RARE GIBSON & CO. BRONZE KEY PISTOL, .50 CALIBER

This is a rare, original bronze Key Pistol manufactured by Gibson & Company of Baltimore, Maryland. Dating to the first half of the 19th century, key pistols provided jailers with a little added protection when dealing with incarcerated hard cases. The pistol is simple in design, 6" long with a smooth bore of about .50 caliber. There is a touch hole on the bottom of the barrel. The barrel was loaded with black powder and a lead ball loaded on top of the charge. It was probably patched to hold it in place. If the jail turnkey encountered trouble he could point the key and hold his candle to the touch hole firing the pistol. Simple, but effective! This key pistol is in very fine condition with a nice dark bronze patina. There are a couple of small dents in the bronze and numerous tiny dings from use. The blade of the key is nicely marked GIBSON & CO. over BALTo. This is a rare and unusual item seldom offered for sale. Stock no. 263834
