Item No.: 9699 Price : SOLD
Item : ORIGINAL WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 "YELLOW BOY" SADDLE RING CARBINE
Description :
This is an antique original Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine manufactured in 1886. It has been converted from .44 Rimfire to .44 Centerfire. It is typical of the Winchester factory conversions done in the latter days of M1866 production after about serial number 150,000. The Model 1866 was produced from 1866 to 1898 and represented a vast improvement over the Henry rifle. The magazine tube was now separate from the barrel and could be loaded from a gate on the right side of the receiver. A wooden forearm was provided to protect the shooter's hand. If you have ever fired a replica Henry, especially with black powder loads, you know how quickly the barrel can become too hot to handle! The rifle was nicknamed the "Yellow Boy" on the frontier due to its brass receiver. The Indians called it "Many Shots". I have always felt that the '66 Winchester is truly "The Gun That Won The West", having been on the frontier for seven years before the Model 1873 made its debut. This carbine is in antique good condition. The bluing of the iron parts has developed a dark brown patina. There are a few pits along the barrel that have been lightly cleaned leaving an area of steel patina. The butt plate and frame have a nice yellow bronze patina. The action works well. The bore is dark and rusted with just traces of the rifling visible. The stock is beautiful with nice figure in the wood of the butt, but almost certainly refinished. Condition-wise it is better than the rest of the gun. The wood is oil finished and has just a couple of small dings and scratches from use. The butt trap gate is missing from the butt plate. This is truly a great Old West cowboy gun. Stock no. 26764
