Item :	VERY RARE, WWII JAPANESE TYPE 97 SNIPER RIFLE, W/ SCOPE & CASE, BAYONET

Description :

This is an original, WWII Japanese Type 97 Sniper Rifle manufactured at Kokura Arsenal. These rifles were only produced at Kokura and Nagoya Arsenals. Kokura produced about 8,000 between 1937 and 1939. Nagoya made about 14,500 between 1938 and 1943. Adopted in 1937, the Type 97 was based on the proven Type 38 Arisaka rifle. The 6.5mm Arisaka cartridge fired from the long barrel minimized smoke and muzzle flash, making Japanese snipers harder to detect. Other than the addition of the scope mount, the only major modification was the turning down of the bolt handle to clear the scope. The 2.5X scopes were numbered to the gun and issued with a protective case. This rifle is in very fine condition with matching rifle numbers and a complete Mum national emblem. It has the correct scope with the protective case, but the scope is not numbered to this rifle. In addition, an original bayonet and scabbard are included. The rifle retains about 95% of its original factory blued finish. There is a little wear on the edges of the trigger guard and floorplate. The butt plate exhibits the most wear with some areas turning brown. The bore and mechanics are excellent. The stock is in very fine condition with just a few tiny dings from use. The scope is in fine condition with good optics. The rubber eye cup remains flexible. The case is of reinforced canvas and shows some light scuffing of the edges. The leather strap shows some scuffing as well. Also included is an early hooked quillan bayonet by Matsushita Kinzoku KK Arsenal and its scabbard. The bayonet is in very fine condition with about 95% of its blued finish remaining. The scabbard has an overall brown patina. Original Type 97 rifles are quite scarce, especially with a matching bolt and full mum. The scopes and cases are even more rare. Stock no. 26770
