CLASSIC PRUSSIAN MODEL 1809 POTSDAM MUSKET, .72 CALIBER
Description :
This is an original, Prussian Model 1809 "Potsdam" Musket produced at Potzdam Armory near Berlin. Originally flintlock smooth bores of .72 caliber, these were arsenal converted to the percussion system in the 1830's. The date of the conversion is stamped on the barrel near the breech and on the butt plate. This one was converted in 1832. As the Union struggled to equip its rapidly growing army in the opening days of the Civil War, the armies of Europe emptied their arsenals, disposing of as many obsolete arms as possible. The U.S. Ordnance Department purchased about 165,000 Prussian arms to equip its soldiers. No Confederate purchases are known. This musket is in fine condition. It has a smooth brown and steel mottled patina. There is some pitting around the bolster. The brass has a nice golden bronze patina. The lock and mechanics work perfectly. The bore is in good condition. There is pitting along its length, but it is not severe. The wood is in fine condition, with just a few small dings and scratches from use. This is a classic Potsdam in original, untouched condition. Stock no. 26706
