Item : IDENTIFIED FIRST MAINE REGIMENT CAVALRYMAN'S BURNSIDE CARBINE
Description :
.54 Caliber Breechloading US Cavalry Carbine. Serial number 35808, manufactured in the late Fall of 1863. Used but well cared for during its service. Has a fine "antique" look. both barrel and receiver are a smooth mixture of plum and grey patina. No pitting. Very clear markings and matching serial numbers. Very good bore and excellent mechanics. Fine oil finished stock and fore end with typical service dings. Two clear inspectors cartouches. Left rear toe carved, "1st Maine/EHO". Right butt marked more lightly, "EHO/Co M". This carbine was issued to Pvt. Eugene H. Otis. Private Otis enlisted in December 1863 and joined the regiment in the field in January 1864. He was hurt or wounded in either March or May of 1864 and was hospitalized until August 1864 when he rejoined his Company. He saw multiple actions around Richmond and Petersburg and mustered out with his regiment after Appomattox.
