Item :	VERY FINE, HARPERS FERRY U.S. MODEL 1841 "MISSISSIPPI" RIFLE

This is an original U.S. Model 1841 Rifle produced at the National Armory at Harpers Ferry in 1851. Harpers Ferry produced 25,296 of these rifles from 1846 to 1855. Known as the "Mississippi" rifle by virtue of its service with Jefferson Davis's Mississippi Regiment in the Mexican American War, the Model 1841 soldiered on into the Civil War. It was used by both sides. In addition, settlers bound west on the Oregon Trail could purchase one of these rifles from the government. They are referred to as jaegers or yaugers in contemporary accounts. Originally, the M1841 fired a patched .54 round ball, but many were rebored to .58 caliber for use during the Civil War. This is an unmodified Harpers Ferry example in very fine condition. It remains in its original .54 caliber. The barrel retains nearly all of its armory browned finish. This is a plum brown color that is decidedly different from a brown patina. The case colors of the lock have darkened to a mottled blue and gray. The hammer is a darker blue/brown. The brass furniture has an even yellow brass patina. The gun has excellent mechanics. The bore is in very fine condition, mostly shiny with just an occasional light pit. The stock is in fine condition. There are the usual small dings and scratches associated with use. Inspector's initials are stamped on the left flat of the stock. There is a letter "B" carved on the left side of the butt. The patchbox still contains the replacement nipple and a nipple wrench. The Mississippi Rifle is a great historic arm, with service in two wars and America's Westward expansion. Harpers Ferry examples are particularly desirable. Stock no. 25246
