VERY FINE SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1879 CAVALRY CARBINE, .45-70
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1879 Trapdoor Cavalry Carbine manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1881. It is chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. Almost identical to the earlier Model 1873, the Model 1879 had a stronger, thicker receiver. Only about 15,000 of this type carbine were made from 1879 to 1885, compared to 140,000 rifles. This carbine is in very fine condition, with more than 90% of its factory blued finish remaining. There is some finish loss and speckling of the receiver and a little bit of finish wear on the lock plate. The case colors on the breech block have darkened on the outside but remain vivid on the protected interior. The gun has an excellent bore and mechanics. The stock is in very fine condition with just a tiny ding or two from use or storage. There is a crisp inspector's cartouche on the left side of the wrist. The original three piece cleaning rod is still in the butt trap. Trapdoor carbines are far more scarce than the rifles. This is a beautiful example of the Model 1879. Stock no. 25215
