CIVIL WAR WHITNEY NAVY PERCUSSION REVOLVER, .36 CALIBER
Description :
Here is an original, Civil War "Navy" Revolver made by Eli Whitney of New Haven, Connecticut. It is a .36 caliber, six-shot, single action percussion revolver with a 7 1/2" barrel. This is a Second Model, 5th Type revolver. The Whitney was an early competitor to the Colt Navy and was quite popular. It saw widespread use during the Civil War with over half of the Second Models going to the Army and Navy. This is a well used example. It is in antique good condition. It has been refinished sometime in the past and this finish has worn and turned a smooth brown. The exception is the loading lever. Originally casehardened, the lever is now blue and has much more finish than the remainder of the gun. The hammer, trigger, and the wingnut for the cylinder pin also have a lot of blue finish remaining. The Whitney markings are faint on the barrel and none of the cylinder scene remains. The action works fairly well, but the hammer is a little sticky as it falls. The bore and chambers have some pitting with the rifling strongly visible along the bore's length. The walnut grips are in very good condition. There are no visible military markings on the gun. This is no museum piece, but it is a revolver that has "seen the elephant". Stock no. 24226
