Item No.: 9332 Price : SOLD
Description :
This is a fine American Kentucky Long Rifle made by "J. ROOP". Probably made about 1815 as a flintlock, the gun has been converted to percussion and the barrel has been smooth-bored. Smooth bore guns were more versatile on the frontier. They allowed the use of shot for small game and a patched round ball was accurate out to 50 or 60 yards for taking larger animals. While some were built as smooth bore guns, I believe this one was smoothed later. The lock shows remnants of the pan and the filled holes where the frizzen spring was mounted. The conversion is a "drum & nipple" type. The rifle features a nicely engraved brass patchbox with a daisy finial and a single piercing. The release for the patchbox lid is on the toe plate, which is about 5" long and engraved. The wrist is checkered and there is incise carving on either side at the ramrod entry thimble. The side plate is a simp,e design, but has some engraving. The octagon barrel is 43 1/2" long and about .47 caliber. The maker's name is stamped on the top flat. The gun is in fine condition. The barrel and lock have a dark brown patina. There is some rusting on the lock plate and hammer. The brass furniture has a dark bronze patina. The lock works fairly well. The bore is dark and rusty. The stock has "Roman Nose" styling with a sweeping curve along its length. It is curly maple with very nice figure. Two of the four barrel keys are missing. This is a fine old Kentucky with graceful lines and styling. Stock no. 24835
