Item : FINE AMERICAN KENTUCKY FLINTLOCK FOWLER BY C. SCHULTZ
Description :
This is a beautiful American Kentucky Flintlock Fowler built by what I believe is "C. Schulz" and probably dating to about 1810. The signature is in script and hard to decipher. The gun has an octagon to round smooth bore barrel that is just a fraction of an inch short of 48" long. This could technically be referred to as a "smooth rifle" as it is built with rifle architecture. It features a rifle style trigger guard, a cheekrest, front and rear sights, and a beautiful brass patchbox. Smooth bore guns were more versatile on the frontier. They allowed the use of shot for small game and a patched round ball was accurate out to 50 or 60 yards for taking larger animals. Many hunters preferred the fit of a rifle to that of a true fowler and thus was born the "smooth rifle". This rifle is in fine condition. It remains in its original flintlock configuration. The brass patchbox is tastefully engraved and features a horse head finial with a single piercing. The release button is on the top of the butt plate heel. There is a German silver Hunter's Star inlay on the cheek rest with a wriggle engraved border. The sideplate has a nice ornate design. There is a German silver thumb plate on the top of the wrist. The barrel and lock have a dark brown patina. The brass has a golden brass patina. The lock functions well. The bore is dark and rough with pitting. The stock is maple with very plain figure. It has a shallow "Roman Nose" style butt that curves along its length. The wood along the barrel channel is very thin and has long slender chips missing on both sides. These are quite old and have worn smooth with use. The barrel is secured in the channel with four keys. One is missing. There are the normal small dings and scratches associated with use. The ramrod is tapered. This is a fine old American Long Gun in the classic style. Stock no. 24834
