Item No.: 9318 Price : $1,095.00
Description :
This is an original, Prussian Model 1809 "Potsdam" Musket produced at Danzig ( Now Gdansk, Poland) in Prussia. The majority were produced at Potsdam, hence the name. Originally flintlock smooth bores of .72 caliber, these were arsenal converted to the percussion system in the 1830's. The date of the conversion is stamped on the barrel near the breech and on the butt plate. This one was converted in 1832. As the Union struggled to equip its rapidly growing army in the opening days of the Civil War, the armies of Europe emptied their arsenals, disposing of as many obsolete arms as possible. The U.S. Ordnance Department purchased about 165,000 Prussian arms to equip its soldiers. No Confederate purchases are known. This musket is in very fine condition. The metal has a mottled steel and brown patina. The hammer and area around the bolster are dark brown. The trigger guard and butt plate have a golden brass patina and the barrel bands and nose cap have a dark bronze patina. The lock works well. The bore is pretty rough, dark brown, and badly pitted. The stock is very fine with a few small dings from use. The name "E.A. KENNARD" is stamped on the right side of the butt. There are German unit markings from the gun's earliest service on the butt plate tang. This is a very nice example of a Civil War Potsdam Musket. Stock no. 24843
