Description :
Here is a rare, original Civil War U.S. Model 1858 Hardee Hat. Named after William J. Hardee, a career officer in the U.S. Army, this was the regulation dress hat of the Union Army during the Civil War. Commissioned in 1838, Hardee was Commandant of Cadets at West Point from 1856 to 1860. He then served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st U.S. Cavalry until just before the outbreak of the Civil War. In 1855, he published "Rifle and Light Infantry Tactics for the Exercise and Manoeuvres of Troops When Acting as Light Infantry or Riflemen". Used by both sides, this manual, known as Hardee's Tactics, would become the most used drill manual of the Civil War. Ironically, Hardee resigned his commission in 1861 to fight in the Confederate States Army where he became a Lieutenant General and Corps Commander. Though intended as a dress hat, the Hardee hat was worn in the field by many units. The most notable was the famed Iron Brigade. Composed of Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana troops, they were called the "Black Hats" throughout the war because of their distinctive Hardee Hats. This hat is in good condition. It is the hat of an enlisted Artilleryman with a faux embroidered, crossed-cannon artillery, brass hat device. There is a brass sideplate and the scarlet hat cord of the artillery. The hat is in good condition, complete but with some tearing of the felt around the top of the crown. There is also a tear on the back of the hat that shows a very old attempt at repair with some adhesive residue. There is some soiling of the hat and cord and the brass insignias show some light tarnish. Only a remnant of the ostrich plume remains. The original label is still in the crown. The passage of 150 years has taken its toll on hats of the Civil War era. A complete Hardee Hat is rare find. Stock no. 24871
