Item No.: 9269 Price : SOLD
Description :
Here is an original, Civil War Era British Pattern 1853 Volunteer Rifle Musket manufactured by the London Armoury Company in 1862. It is a regulation Pattern 1853 Rifle Musket of .577 caliber with a finer finish and a checkered walnut stock. In the pre-Civil War Era the British Volunteer Force was organized as a voluntary part-time organization for the purpose of home defence in the event of invasion. Given the breadth of the British Empire, it was believed that there were insufficient troops remaining at home to mount a viable defense of Britain should they be attacked. The Volunteer Force could be called out “in case of actual invasion, or of appearance of an enemy in force on the coast, or in case of rebellion arising in either of these emergencies.” The volunteers were expected to purchase their own arms, the production of which was supervised by the War Department to insure uniformity of gauge. This rifle-musket by London Arms is one made for the Volunteer Force. It is a beautiful example in very fine condition. The fit, finish, and fine workmanship are evident. The musket retains more than 95% of its factory blued finish. The only real finish wear is on the barrel bands, with the lower band having the most wear. The barrel retains more than 98% of its blued finish. The lock plate and hammer retain nearly all of their case colored finish. The trigger guard and butt plate have a nice dark bronze patina. The nose cap is brighter. The gun has excellent mechanics and a very fine bore. The bore is bright and shiny with sharp rifling. The checkered walnut is very fine with just a few small dings and scratches from use. There is a crisp 1862 dated maker's cartouche on the right side of the butt. The lock plate is marked with the Crown of Queen Victoria and the maker's mark "1862" over "L.A. Co.". Included is an original Pattern 1853 triangular socket bayonet and scabbard in fine condition. This is a superb example of one of the finest rifle-muskets ever made. Stock no. 24761
