Item No.: 9262 Price : SOLD
Description :
This is an original, Civil War U.S. Model 1860 Spencer Repeating Cavalry Carbine. The Spencer was a breech loading, lever action, repeating design fed from a tubular magazine in the butt. It was .52 caliber, firing the .56-.56 Spencer rimfire cartridge. The cartridge designation referred to the case diameter at the throat and base, being a straight walled case. The Spencer was adopted after a private demonstration given to President Lincoln, who heartily endorsed the new design. The Spencer Carbine would go on to become the main cavalry arm of the United States, serving well into the Indian War period. This carbine is in very good to fine condition. It retains about 30% of its factory blued finish with some finish remaining on the butt plate, trigger plate, lock plate, and lever. The barrel and receiver have little finish remaining with a mottled steel and brown patina. The gun has excellent mechanics and a very fine bore. There are a few specks in the bore, but it is mostly bright with strong rifling. The stock is in fine condition with visible inspector's cartouches on the left side of the wrist. One is strong and the other is a light strike. This is a good solid example of the "Damn Yankee rifle you could load in the morning and shoot all day!". Stock no. 24725
