Item No.: 9218 Price : SOLD
Description :
Here is an original, German Gewehr 98 Mauser Infantry Rifle manufactured at Spandau in 1906 and chambered for the 7.92x57mm (8mm Mauser) cartridge. This was the standard German battle rifle of the First World War. This rifle appears to have been struck on the wrist by a piece of shrapnel. It has a square grooved channel cut through the wood with some splintering on either side. I believe that only something traveling at a very high velocity could have caused damage like this. The damage has been smoothed by handling over the years. The rifle is in fine condition with all numbers matching except the magazine floor plate, which is a "59" instead of "49". Go figure! The rifle retains about 70% of its factory blued finish on the barrel and stock furniture. The receiver, bolt, and butt plate remain in the correct armory bright finish. There is some very fine speckling on the bright parts. It is heavier on the butt plate. The bore is fair to good, a little dark with some pitting that has been shot smooth. The stock is in fine condition except, of course, for what may be a shrapnel strike. It has the usual small dings and scratches from use. The German acceptance markings are visible and the stock is numbered to the gun. This is a nice early Gewehr 98, in better condition than many I see. Stock no. 24674
