Description :
This is an original, U.S Model 1885 Campaign Hat of the late Indian Wars and Spanish-American War era. The M1885 was similar to the earlier M1875 pattern hat but differed in three ways. It was made of fur felt rather than wool felt, it had a raw edged brim reinforced with three rows of stitching, and there were ventilator holes punched in the sides of the hat. These holes are punched in the shape of a snowflake and these are sometimes referred to as "snowflake pattern" hats. They were issued in either black or drab color. Enlisted men could wear either color, but the color had to be uniform throughout the troop. Officers could only wear black. In 1889 the regulations changed and enlisted men could only wear drab. Officers could choose black or drab. This hat is a drab colored example, worn by an Officer in the post-1889 period with a black and gold Officer's hat cord. It is in very good condition. There are a few tiny moth nips and the point of the creased top has worn through on the front of the hat. The felt has faded a bit from exposure. There is only a small remnant of the leather sweat band remaining. There is also a small portion of the label, but not enough to identify the maker. The ventilator holes are clearly visible on the sides of the hat. These hats were rugged and dependable and most were worn out in service. Few have survived. This is a good example and will enhance any Indian Wars collection. Stock no. 24493
