U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1898 KRAG-JORGENSEN RIFLE
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured in 1900 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 330,000 were made between 1898 and 1903. The M1898 Krag had the the shortest service life of any U.S. arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 5 years after production began. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. This rifle is in very good to fine condition. The barrel retains about 90% of its factory blued finish. The stock furniture ha mostly turned a smooth, mottled brown. The oil quenched receiver has faded from black to a mottled gray. The bolt, finished bright, has a pewter patina. The rifle has excellent mechanics and fine bore. The stock is very good. There are the usual dings and scratches from years of use. There is a small gouge in the wood on the comb of the stock. The rifle has a clear 1900 dated Inspector's cartouche on the left side of the stock. This is a nice, untouched, and correct Krag Rifle. Stock no. 23614
