This is an original, U.S. Model 1899 Krag-Jorgensen Cavalry Carbine made at Springfield Armory and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. The Model 1899 was produced from 1899-1902, with only about 36,000 made. It was the last dedicated cavalry carbine used by the U.S. military and the last American carbine chambered to fire the same cartridge as the rifle. The Model 1899 omitted the sling ring bar and was instead carried in a leather boot attached to the saddle. This carbine is in fine condition, with about 90% of its factory blued finish remaining. There is some light finish wear on the barrel and trigger guard. The black, oil quenched receiver retains most of its finish with a few light blemishes on the magazine cover. The bolt is finished bright and has the straight knurled cocking knob. The bore is rough. The rifling is strong, but it is dark and has pitting along its length. The stock is very good, but someone sanded out the cartouche, leaving a shallow depression. The wood around the butt plate was proud and someone has sanded the edge flush with the plate. The stock has been given what looks like an oil finish. Even with the missing cartouche, this is a good looking, original Krag carbine. Stock no. 23477
