Item :	U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1898 KRAG-JORGENSEN RIFLE

Description :

This is an original, U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured in 1902 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 330,000 were made between 1898 and 1903. The M1898 Krag had the the shortest service life of any U.S. arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 5 years after production began. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. This rifle is in very good condition. It retains about 50% of its factory blued finish on the barrel. There is finish loss along the top of the barrel with a scattering of dark brown spots. The receiver retains abou 30% of its oil quenched black finish, with the remainder a pewter gray. The stock furniture has turned a smooth brown, as has the bolt handle. The mechanics work very well. The bore is a little dark and frosty, but has strong rifling along its length. The stock is in very good condition with the usual dings and scratches from use. There is a clear inspector's cartouche on the left side of the wrist dated "1902". There is a "P" firing proof behind the trigger guard. This Krag has seen some use, but is a nice untouched example.
