VERY FINE U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1898 KRAG-JORGENSEN RIFLE
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured in 1901 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 330,000 were made between 1898 and 1903. The M1898 Krag had the the shortest service life of any U.S. arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 5 years after production began. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. This rifle is in very fine condition. It retains about 95% of its factory blued finish. There is a little finish wear on the trigger guard and edges of the sight. The butt plate has about 50% of its finish remaining. The receiver and magazine of these rifles were finished with a black, oil quenched finish. The rifle retains a mottled 80% of this finish. The bolt and bolt handle remain armory bright with a little browning of the bolt handle knob. The mechanics and bore are both excellent. The bore is brilliant and shiny. The stock is in very fine condition as well. There are just a few tiny dings and scratches from use. The Inspector's cartouche and firing "P" proof are deep and crisp. This is a great example of the Krag rifle. Stock no. 23099
