Item No.: 8696 Price : SOLD
Item : EARLY FRENCH FLINTLOCK OFFICER'S FUSIL, CA. 1770
Description :
This is an early, original, Flintlock French Fusil or short musket of the type used by Officers. It probably dates to the 1770's. It is a very lightweight graceful arm, with a 30" barrel of .60 caliber and an overall length of just 46". The barrel transitions from octagonal to a short section with 16 flats to a short fluted section that terminates at a wedding band. The remainder of the barrel is round, but with a raised rib running along the top to the muzzle. The skill necessary to place that arrow straight, raised rib along an otherwise perfectly round barrel amazes me. The lock is of an early style with no waterproof pan and no roller on the frizzen or frizzen spring. It is engraved and marked "Amtel Le Jeune A Caen". I think this is the maker, roughly translating as Amtel the younger of Caen. The fusil is in very good condition. The entire gun is iron mounted. The metal has an overall pewter gray patina that is over-speckled with dark brown. The lock works well. The smooth bore is dark with some light pitting, but for the most part it is smooth. The touch hole has eroded to the point of being quite large. The stock is made of European walnut with good figure. There is a knot passing from side to side through the comb of the French styled butt that gives an interesting "bullseye" pattern to the wood. The stock is raise relief carved with the trigger guard sitting on a raised panel. The iron buttplate has an ornate, engraved tang. The wood is in good condition, but shows the arm was used. There is some wear of the carving, especially on the belly of the stock ahead of the trigger guard from carry. There is an old chip at the back of the lock mortise. There is a chip on the left side of the stock along the barrel channel. It is about 3 1/4" by 1/8" long. There is an old repair to the wood on the left side of the stock at the muzzle, about 2 1/4" long. This is a fine, old French gun that was of the highest quality. Stock no. 23036
