This is an original, Colt Model 1855 Sidehammer Pocket Revolver manufactured in 1855, the first year of production. Also known as the Colt "Root Model" (after Colt designer Elisha K. Root), it was a .28 caliber, 5-shot, percussion revolver with a 3 1/2" octagonal barrel. This was Colt's only percussion handgun built on a solid frame. This one is a first production Model 2 with an unfluted cylinder. Approximately 24,500 of this type were produced. This revolver is in good to very good condition. It is complete and all original with matching numbers. The gun retains about 30% of its original factory blued finish. There is more finish on the right side of the gun than on the left. There are some areas of fine pitting on the left side of the frame and on the cylinder. These areas have a dark brown, rough patina. Much of the rolled cylinder scene does remain visible. The mechanics work very well. The bore is dark but smooth, with strong rifling. The one-piece walnut grips are very good with no chips or cracks and just a few tiny dings from use. There is some wear, but much of the original varnish remains. Many of these were privately purchased and carried during the Civil War. Stock no. 22884
