Item No.: 8628 Price : SOLD
Item : CIVIL WAR LEFAUCHEUX 12MM PINFIRE REVOLVER
Description :
This is an original, Civil War era Lefaucheux M1858 12mm Pinfire Revolver. These large frame, big bore revolvers were imported in significant numbers during the Civil War. They were popular, and privately purchased, were carried by officers of both sides. The U.S. Government officially purchased and issued 13,000 of these revolvers. Union cavalry regiments that are known to have received Lefaucheux revolvers include the 5th Illinois, 2nd & 5th Kansas, 6th Kentucky, 8th Missouri, 1st Wisconsin and the 9th Missouri State Militia Cavalry. Troops under Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest are known to have had several hundred in their possession in late 1864. Selma Arsenal offered Lefaucheux revolvers with 12 cartridges for sale to Confederate officers for $25.00. No less a personage than Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson was presented with a Lefaucheux and carried it in the field. This particular revolver is in very good condition. It has an overall speckled pewter patina with no original finish remaining. The mechanics are excellent. Surprisingly, the bore and chambers are excellent as well. The bore is shiny and the rifling sharp. The grips are very good with no chips or cracks. There are the usual small dings and scratches from use. This is a good example of the Lefaucheux revolver, a pistol that saw significant use by both sides in the American Civil War. Stock no. 22843
