BRITISH PATTERN 1796 HEAVY CAVALRY OFFICER'S DRESS SWORD & SCABBARD
Description :
This is an original, Napoleonic Era, British Pattern 1796 Heavy Cavalry Officer's Dress Sword & Scabbard made by Reddell of Picadilly, London. Heavy cavalry swords are quite rare and Reddell was a top maker. The sword has a 32" blade. The guard folds to protect the Officer's uniform from wear. The sword is in fine condition. The blade has several small areas of dark pitting, but more than 90% remains bright. The hilt has a beautiful golden bronze patina. The grip is wrapped with silver wire. The scabbard is missing the last 8" of the tip. It retains the throat and the lower carrier ring mount. These fittings are also a golden bronze. The carrier rings appear to be copper. The remaining leather is worn and has some surface flaking, consistent with a sword that is over 200 years old. The throat of the scabbard has an engraved maker's cartouche that says: "REDDELL" "Sword Cutlers to Their R.H. The Prince Regent" "Dukes of Sussex & Cambridge" "17 Picadilly" "London". Their Royal Highness the Prince Regent would become George IV, King of England. He acted as Regent for his father, George III, who was plagued with mental illness. This is a rare and desirable sword of the Napoleonic Era. Stock no. 22460
