FINE, SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1861 RIFLE MUSKET
Description :
This is an original, Civil War, U.S. Model 1861 Springfield Rifle Musket of .58 caliber. The Model 1861 eliminated the Maynard tape primer of the earlier Model 1855 Rifle musket and was the standard U.S. Musket of the Civil War. Though Springfield production ended in 1862, production by contractors continued right through the end of the war. It served from the opening shots to the surrender at Appomattox. This rifle musket was produced at Springfield Armory in 1862. It is in fine condition. It remains in its armory bright finish. This bright finish has a very fine speckling of brown, with some fine pitting around the bolster and percussion cone. The gun has excellent mechanics and a very good bore. There are a few specks of pitting, but the rifling is strong and the bore mostly bright. The stock is in fine condition with just a few small dings and scratches from use. There are two clear cartouches on the left flat of the stock. This is a very nice example of an iconic Civil War long arm. Stock no. 22706
