ANTIQUE U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1898 KRAG-JORGENSEN RIFLE
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured prior to 1898 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 330,000 were made between 1897 and 1903. The M1898 Krag had the the shortest service life of any U.S. arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 5 years after production began. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. Model 1898 Krag rifles made prior to serial number 152670 are considered to be antiques under Federal Firearms law. This rifle, in the 119,xxx range, qualifies as an antique. The rifle is in very good condition. It retains about 30% of its factory blued finish. Most of what blue remains is on the barrel. The stock furniture has a pewter silver patina. This pewter silver patina continues on the receiver and magazine cover as well. The rifle has excellent mechanics and a very fine bore. The stock has the usual small dings and scratches from years of use. The Inspector's cartouche is present but too faint to read. Model 1898 Krags that are antiques are fairly scarce. Stock no. 22632
