Item No.: 8457 Price : SOLD
Item : 1862 DATED CONFEDERATE CS RICHMOND RIFLE-MUSKET
Description :
This is an original, Confederate Armory .58 Caliber Rifle-Musket produced in 1862. These Confederate made muskets were produced on machinery captured by Stonewall Jackson from the National Armory at Harpers Ferry. This is an early Type III Richmond with a "Mid Hump" lockplate. The captured Harpers Ferry machinery was set up to produce the Model 1855 rifle-musket with the Maynard Tape Priming device. These musket locks had a distinctive high hump where the device was mounted. The Confederacy did not use the device. Early muskets built with captured lock plates have a "high hump". As the Richmond Armory began to produce their own locks, the unnecessary hump was reduced in size throughout production. This musket is in fair to good condition. It has had some crude restoration done. The gun is original from the middle band back. The stock was stretched from the middle band forward. The replacement wood does not have band springs installed. The front band, nose cap, and ram rod are modern (within the last 40 years or so) replacements. The rear sight appears to be replaced with a Civil War era Springfield rifle-musket sight. The remainder of the gun is correct. The barrel is of Richmond production with the correct rear sight dovetail slotted for the steadying pin. The lock is a correct, early mid hump dated 1862, with "C.S." over "RICHMOND,VA.". The remaining portion of the stock is of Richmond manufacture with the correct "mule's foot" piece of wood in the lock mortise. Portions of the metal have been cleaned, leaving a mostly pewter silver patina with a speckling of pitting. The area around the bolster has more significant pitting and the hammer has light pitting overall. The lock plate is dark brown with crisp lettering. The front lock plate screw must have broken off and a screw has been inserted from the lock side to fill the hole. There are two small spots on the left side of the stock that may have been filled. An "X" is carved on the left flat and a large "R" on the left side of the butt. The lock works fairly well, but the mainspring is light. The bore is dark and rusty, but remains rifled. Many of these were smooth bored for use as shotguns. There is a lot of original Richmond here, a perfect base for a correct restoration. Stock no. 22286
