1861 PRODUCTION COLT MODEL 1851 NAVY REVOLVER

Description :
|
This is an original Colt Model 1851 Navy .36 Caliber Percussion Revolver manufactured in 1861. Earning its name from the Naval battle scene engraved on the cylinder, the '51 Navy was Colt's primary medium caliber revolver in the percussion era. Produced from 1850 until 1873, it was enormously popular and saw extensive use during the American Civil War by combatants on both sides. Thousands were carried into the Great American West both before and after the war. They traveled to the Gold Fields, along the Oregon Trail, and into every cow town in the West. Wild Bill Hickock favored the '51 Navy and carried a pair, butt forward, drawing the charges and reloading them each morning. This revolver is in very good condition. It is all matching, including the wedge. The lettering remains crisp and the cylinder scene is visible. There is little to no finish remaining, with just a trace on the frame where it is protected by the hammer. The gun has an overall mottled steel color with some spots of dark brown. The action and mechanism work perfectly, with tight lock up. The bore is good, mostly smooth and gray, with sharp rifling along its length. The grips are very good with no chips or cracks. There are a few small dings and scratches from years of use. There are initials carved into the butt of the right panel. They are either "R C" or "R E". The center post of the "E" is faint and may be a scratch. Navy Colts made in 1861 are of particular interest to collectors as these were some of the last that may have gone to the Southern States. This Navy, from an old Virginia collection, is an iconic American firearm. Stock no. 22287
