Item :	FINE, ENGLISH FLINTLOCK GREAT COAT PISTOL BY ASTON

Here is a Flintlock Great Coat Pistol made by "Aston" of Manchester, England and probably dating to the 1790's. Larger than the tiny pocket pistol's of the era, these large bore pistols were perfect for the pockets of a great coat and provided traveler's with some hefty protection from the highway men prowling the back roads of England. This pistol has a British Proofed, 6" octagonal smoothbore barrel of about .58 caliber. The pistol is of first quality with well executed engraving on the iron furniture and a high quality lock with sliding safety. The trigger guard has a beautiful pineapple finial. The pistol is in very fine condition. It has an overall smooth brown patina. The lock works well. The safety is a little stiff, but I think it just needs a little oil. The bore is dark, but mostly smooth. The stock is fine as well. The butt has beautiful cut checkering that remains sharp. There is a hairline check crack in the wood grain of the left side panel. There is a tiny hairline crack running from the rear lock screw escutcheon to the barrel channel at the breech. There is also a very small smudge of white paint on the left side panel and a tiny chip at the barrel key slot on the right side of the gun. None of these detract in any way from the appearance or function of the gun. The pistol is marked "ASTON" on the lock and "MANCHESTER" on the top barrel flat. This is a beautiful, early flintlock gentleman's pistol of high quality and great condition. Stock no. 22244
