Item :	1848 DATED, U.S. MODEL 1841 MISSISSIPPI RIFLE BY TRYON

This is an original U.S. Model 1841 Rifle produced by George W. Tryon of Philadelphia in 1848. Tryon produced 5,000 of these rifles from 1846 to 1848. Known as the "Mississippi" rifle by virtue of its service with Jefferson Davis's Mississippi Regiment in the Mexican American War, the Model 1841 soldiered on into the Civil War. It was used by both sides. In addition, settlers bound west on the Oregon Trail could purchase one of these rifles from the government. They are referrred to as jaegers or yaugers in contemporary accounts. Originally, the M1841 fired a patched .54 round ball. The Mississippi Rifle is a great historic arm, with service in two wars and America's Westward expansion. This rifle is in antique good condition. The ramrod is missing and the front swivel has broken off. The barrel is evenly pitted along its length. It has a pewter patine with a heavy speckling of brown. The lock has a smoother brown patina. The gun has excellent mechanics. The bore has some pitting, but the rifling is strongly visible along its length. The brass furniture has a nice bronze patina. The number "70" has been stamped into the forward part of the patch box. The stock is very good, but has the typical scattering of small dings and scratches from use. There are a couple of very small holes that have been filled. There is an old brass collection tag nailed to the right side of the butt at the heel. I can not imagine being stupid enough to nail something to a collectible gun, but apparently someone is. Go figure. This is a battered old warhorse, but a rifle that played a significant part in America's history. Stock no. 22246
