SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1812 FLINTLOCK MUSKET
Description :
Here is an original, U.S. Model 1812 Flintlock Musket of .69 caliber manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1816. This model was only made from 1814 to 1816. There were three distinct types. This is a third type with the barrel band springs located forward of the lower and middle bands. This particular musket is extensively documented in the book "Springfield Armory Infantry Muskets 1795-1844" by Kent W. Johns. It is described on pages 56-60 with extensive photo documentation of the internals and all markings. The musket is in fine condition with an overall pewter steel patina. There is some pitting on the butt plate, about 40% of the surface. The Springfield markings on the lock plate are a little faint. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is a little dark but mostly smooth, with just a few small pitted areas. The stock is very fine with just a few small dings from use. The butt features the early, cut out cheek rest and the date of manufacture, 1816, stamped on the tang of the butt plate. Both of these features were phased out in 1816. The inspector's cartouche of Elisha Toby remains faintly visible on the left flat of the stock. This is a beautiful example of the M1812 Flintlock. Here is a chance to own the actual musket pictured in the book on early Springfield muskets! Stock no. 22267
