COLT MODEL 1851 NAVY REVOLVER, NICKEL PLATED
Description :
This is an original, Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver manufactured in 1863. The '51 Navy was Colt's primary medium caliber (.36) handgun in the percussion era. They were enormously popular. Many were privately purchased and carried during the Civil War. Produced until 1873, many '51s went into the Great American West. This revolver has been nickel plated. Believed to be a more durable finish than bluing, nickel plating was a quite common finish in the post Civil War era. There is no way to know when this revolver was plated. The revolver retains nearly all of its nickel finish. The lettering remains visible, but the cylinder scene is completely gone. The hammer, trigger, and wedge are not plated and have a brown patina. The action works well. The bore and chambers are dark, with some pitting, but the rifling is visible along its length. The grips are complete with no chips or cracks, but exhibit some wear from carry. The numbers are all matching, except for the wedge. While not a big fan of nickel, I have to admit that a nickeled '51 Navy Colt is a handsome revolver. Stock no. 21432
