HARPER'S FERRY U.S. MODEL 1816 PERCUSSION CONVERSION MUSKET
Description :
This is an original U.S. Model 1816 Flintlock Musket manufactured at Harper's Ferry Armory in 1841. It has been arsenal converted to percussion with a "Cone in Barrel" modification. Thousands of these conversions were done to supply muskets to both sides during the Civil War. As late as Gettysburg in 1863, 60% of the muskets on the field were .69 caliber smoothbores, even though the military had adopted the rifle-musket in 1855. This musket is in very good condition. Originally finished bright, the musket now has a mostly smooth, dark brown patina overall. There is some pitting around the bolster. The bore is dark with significant pitting. The stock is very good with the usual scattering of small dings and scratches from use. The original inspector's cartouches have been defaced and replaced by the initials of the final inspector after the conversion. This is a nice example of a type widely used through the first half of the Civil War. Stock no. 20993
