Item No.: 7942 Price : SOLD
Item : N. STARR U.S. MODEL 1817 "COMMON" FLINTLOCK RIFLE
Description :
This is an original U.S. Model 1817 Flintlock Rifle manufactured in 1842 by Nathan Starr & Son of Middletown, CT. Known as the "Common Rifle", they were produced with a 36 inch .54 caliber rifled barrel. Total production of the Model 1817 was 38,200 with Starr producing 10,020. Many of these were converted to percussion for use in the Civil War. This rifle is in good condition. At some time in its life this rifle was converted to percussion and re-bored to .58 caliber for use with the Minie ball. It has been reconverted to a flintlock. The rifle has a speckled pewter patina with some significant pitting around the pan area. There is some pitting on the barrel bands and heavy pitting on the side plate. The front lock plate screw is missing and the hammer screw is an incorrect replacement. The frizzen screw is also replaced. The mechanics work well. The bore has some pitting, but the rifling is visible along its length. The rifling is of the type used during the Civil War with Minie ammunition. The front sight is missing. The stock has a few dings from use. There appears to be a repair to the trigger guard strap just behind the guard itself. The Common Rifle has always been one of my favorite U.S. Arms. This is no museum piece, but it is a good representative piece that displays well. Stock no. 20873
