Item :	MUSEUM QUALITY, SILVER MOUNTED, 18TH CENTURY NEAPOLITAN MIQUELET FOWLER

This is an original, mid 18th century, Neapolitan (Italian) Miquelet Fowling Piece made in the Spanish style. The miquelet lock was an early flintlock design common to the Mediterranean countries. It is distinguished by an external mainspring, horizontal sears pushing through the lock plate, and the large screw ring on the top jaw. On a Spanish style miquelet, the main spring pushes up on the heel of the cock. The miquelet was a forerunner to the true flintlock, but also a contemporary, with production continuing throughout the flintlock era. This is a true museum piece of the highest quality. Probably produced for a Nobleman ca. 1750, it is silver mounted with beautiful engraving and high relief carving. The gun is in very fine condition, with the barrel retaining about 85% of its rust blued finish and the remainder turning a smooth blue-gray. The lock functions perfectly. The .70 caliber smooth bore has some dark areas of significant pitting. These do not extend to the outside of the barrel. The stock is in fine condition, with just a few dings from years of use and storage. All of the silver furniture is engraved and surrounded by high relief wood carving. The gun is marked with an initialed cartouche on the top flat of the barrel and has a beautiful gold makers cartouche mark on the lock plate. One of the striking features of this gun is its light weight. Guns of this quality and condition are seldom encountered outside of museums. Stock no. 20812
