FINE, HARPER'S FERRY U.S. MODEL 1816 PERCUSSION CONVERSION MUSKET

Description :
This is an original U.S. Model 1816 Musket manufactured at Harper's Ferry in 1824. This is an arsenal conversion to percussion, done in the standard "cone in barrel" style. After the adoption of the Model 1842 musket, the government decided to start converting existing Flintlocks to percussion. Conversions began in 1848 and continued into the 1860's. These were standard issue arms in the early days of the Civil War. As late as Gettysburg in 1863, up to 60% of the arms on the field were .69 caliber smoothbores. This musket is in fine condition. It has a mottled brown patina overall, with traces of the original Harper's Ferry "Lacquer Brown" finish visible. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is very fine, with minimal pitting. The stock is fine with just a few small dings and scratches from use. There are two fine cartouches on the left flat of the stock, as well as a number of sub-inspector markings. This is one of the muskets selected for inspection and gauging. The number "7" has been stamped on all the parts. This is a great example of a musket that saw wide spread use during the Civil War.
