VERY FINE, SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1888 TRAPDOOR RIFLE
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1888 Trapdoor Rifle manufactured at Springfield Armory and chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. Known as the "Ramrod Bayonet Model", the Model 1888 was the last of the trapdoors and the last of the big bore, black powder rifles. This rifle is in fine condition. It retains more than 95% of its factory blued finish. The breech block case colors have turned a dark gray. The mechanics are excellent and the bore is near mint. The stock has a nice dark reddish brown color. There are a few small dings and scratches from use. There is a crisp inspector's cartouche, dated 1891, on the left side of the stock and a script "P" just behind the trigger guard. The cartouche does have a ding over the date, but remains legible. This is a beautiful Trapdoor, with great condition. Stock no. 20716.
