Item No.: 7854 Price : SOLD
Item : FINE, U.S. MODEL 1795 SPRINGFIELD FLINTLOCK MUSKET
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1795 Springfield Flintlock Musket manufactured in 1810. The Model 1795 is a landmark in U.S. military history. It was the first standardized and official musket made for the U.S. government, the first arm produced at a U.S. arsenal, and the first arm ever produced by Springfield Armory. Basically a copy of the French Charleville musket used by U.S. troops in the Revolution, it was produced until 1814. This musket is in fine condition, with a smooth, mottled steel and brown patina. There is pitting around the pan and the vent is about shot out. The lock and mechanics work well. The bore is very dark, dry, and dirty. There is an old piece of paper about half way down the barrel. The stock is very nice with just a few small dings from use. There is a faint U.S. in script on the left stock flat. The lock bears the early Springfield markings and is dated 1810. The butt plate also has an 1810 date on the heel. The right side of the butt has the name "F. JENNES." burned into the wood in nice block lettering. It is also on the left side, but incomplete, saying "F. JENN". The number or date "1812" is stamped on the side plate and left flat of the stock. I do not know the meaning of this mark or when it was applied. No collection of American military arms is complete without the first one- The Model 1795! Stock no. 20654
