CIVIL WAR SPENCER U.S. "ARMY MODEL" MILITARY RIFLE
Description :
This is an original, Civil War Spencer U.S. "Army Model" Military Rifle chambered for the .52 caliber Spencer 56-56 cartridge. The Spencer rifle was demonstrated to President Lincoln and immediately gained his personal endorsement. The Spencer went on to become the pre-eminent cavalry carbine of the war and served well into the Indian Wars. Full length Spencer rifles like this one served during the war as well. The first combat use of the Spencer Rifle was at Gettysburg in the hands of Custer's 5th Michigan Cavalry. They were the only unit on the field that day armed with Spencers and they were carrying full length Rifles. This Spencer is in very good to fine condition. The gun has a smooth, overall mottled brown and pewter patina. There are traces of blue on the barrel. There are traces of case colors left on the loading lever. There is some pitting in the bore, but visible rifling along its length. The mechanics are excellent. The stock has some dings from use, and a larger area of old gouges on the right side of the butt. These are quite old and have worn smooth. There is a hairline crack on the left side of the butt running back from the receiver. There are two good inspector's cartouches on the left wrist of the stock. This is a solid example of the "Army Model" Spencer Rifle.#20653
