Item No.: 7836 Price : SOLD
Item : CIVIL WAR TRIPLETT & SCOTT REPEATING CARBINE
Description :
Here is an original, Civil War, Triplett & Scott Repeating Carbine produced by the Meriden Manufacturing Company of Connecticut. Originally manufactured in .50 caliber Rimfire, this carbine has been converted to centerfire. The Triplett & Scott fed from a 7 round tubular magazine in the butt. It had a unique loading system. The shooter pressed a button just behind the hammer and the entire barrel assembly rotated to the right until the chamber lined up with the magazine on the left side of the butt stock. A cartridge was fed from the spring loaded magazine into the chamber and the barrel was rotated back into the firing position. The magazine tube is inserted into the lower left side of the butt, leaving an area of very thin wood, which generally cracks. This carbine is in very good condition. Originally the guns had case hardened receivers, but this one has a very old blued finish. The gun retains about 60% of this finish. The barrel has an excellent bore and the mechanics work very well. The last owner was a shooter and fired this carbine in competition. The stock is good, with the usual hairline cracks around the magazine tube. They have been repaired. Only about 5,000 of these guns were produced, making them relatively scarce. The co-founder of Meriden Manufacturing was Charles Parker, who later went on to produce the Parker Shotgun, America's most famous side by sides.
