Item :	ALL MATCHING, 1917 DATED, WWI, MAUSER KAR98 BY ERFURT

This is an original, WWI, Mauser Model 1898 Carbine manufactured by Erfurt in 1917. The Kar98 carbine version of the Gew98 rifle was first produced in 1908. In 1914, Kar98 carbines made up only about 13% of the type 98 arms in service. By war's end, they accounted for more than a third of the rifles in the army. While not the most plentiful arm, they rapidly became the most popular rifle used by the German army. Chambered in 8mm Mauser, this carbine also includes the correct, original sling. This gun is in fine condition overall. It is all matching and retains more than 70% of its factory blued finish. The blue is beginning to turn brown in some areas, most notably the stock furniture, trigger guard, and floor plate. Areas of the bolt that are frequently handled have developed a very smooth polished brown patina, with the remainder remaining bright. The bore is very good, with strong rifling. The grooves have a little darkening. The mechanics work perfectly. The stock, which also matches the rifle, is very good, with all acceptance stamps visible. There are a number of small dings, scratches, and gouges from use and storage. The sling is complete and has some surface cracking of the leather, but remains flexible. World War I Kar98 carbines are fairly scarce. This is a good example.
