Item No.: 7816 Price : SOLD
Item : FINE "L. POMEROY" MADE, U.S. MODEL 1835/40 RIFLED CONVERSION MUSKET
Description :
This is an original U.S. Model 1835/40 .69 caliber musket manufactured by "L. Pomeroy" of Pittsfield, Mass. This type was the last production flintlock produced for the U.S. military. Pomeroy produced about 7000 under contract from 1840 until 1846. This is an Arsenal "cone in barrel" conversion from a smooth bore flintlock to a rifled percussion arm. These conversions began in the late 1840's and were done into the Civil War. A shortage of arms on both sides accelerated these conversion programs. The fact that this is rifled indicates a post 1855 conversion to allow use of the newly adopted "Minie" ball ammunition. The ramrod is the correct conversion type, dished for the Minie Ball. These converted .69 caliber muskets were a mainstay of both armies through much of the war. As late as Gettysburg, as many as 60% of the arms on the field were converted .69 caliber muskets. This musket is in fine condition. It remains mostly factory bright with a scattering of developing brown patina spots. The trigger guard has developed a bit more brown patina. The bore is near excellent, but there is some very light pitting near the muzzle, where a tompion was inserted. The mechanics work perfectly. The stock is fine as well with two crisp inspector's cartouches on the left flat. There are a few small dings and scuffs from use and storage. Included is a lead nipple protector and .69 caliber tompion. This is an outstanding example of a Civil War conversion musket and an arm widely used by both sides.
