Item No.: 7744 Price : SOLD
Item : BEAUTIFUL, FACTORY ENGRAVED TYPE IV MANHATTAN NAVY REVOLVER WITH ORIGINAL "SLIM JIM" HOLSTER
Description :
This is an original, Civil War era Manhattan .36 caliber Navy percussion revolver. Originally, the Manhattan Firearms Company produced single shot and "Pepperbox style pistols. When Colt's master patents ran out in 1857, they began to produce high quality copies of the Colt revolver and became one of Colt's most significant competitors. This revolver is beautifully, factory engraved and retains its original high grade grips. It also retains its original California "Slim Jim" style holster. The pistol is in very good condition. The gun has no finish remaining on the steel portions. It has developed a nice pewter patina overall. There is a good deal of Gilt finish remaining on the trigger guard and back strap, about 50%. The mechanics work well. The bore is very good, with strong rifling throughout. The factory grips are very fine, with no damage. They do exhibit some checking at the butt grain, typical of this material. The holster is complete with its riveted strap. There is some surface damage at the cylinder area and at the sewn edge near the trigger guard. It appears to be from contact with an acidic substance. Manhattan revolvers went primarily to the civilian market. Many were privately purchased and carried during the Civil War and many others went west. This is a striking example.
