RARE, U.S. NAVY, SHARPS NEW MODEL 1859 CARBINE

This is an original, Civil War Sharps New Model 1859 Carbine. This is a rare U.S. Navy Sharps. The U.S. Navy purchased a small lot of Sharps Carbines in early 1861. These carbines fall in the 40,000 to 44,000 serial number range and are not fitted with the saddle ring and ring bar. The number purchased is unknown. This is one of those carbines with a serial number of 43,644. It is in good condition overall. There is little finish left, with some blue on the patchbox. The barrel is a smooth pewter gray. The remainder of the gun is a dark brown. There is some significant pitting on the lock plate and receiver. The lever and butt show light pitting. The bore is pitted as well, but has visible rifling throughout. The mechanics work well and the breech locks tightly. The stock shows some use, with small dings, scratches, and gouges. This is a rare carbine that looks to have seen some real service.
