Item No.: 7676 Price : SOLD
Item : ORIGINAL, CIVIL WAR DAHLGREN BOWIE BAYONET & SCABBARD FOR THE U.S. NAVY M1861 WHITNEYVILLE PLYMOUTH RIFLE
Description :
This is an original, Civil War Bowie bayonet made for the U.S. Navy Model 1861 Whitneyville Plymouth Rifle. It was made by the "Ames Manufacturing Co." of Chicopee, Ma. in 1863. These were designed by U.S. Navy Admiral John A. Dahlgren. Dahlgren wanted a Bowie style knife for naval personnel, but could not get Federal approval. The government would approve a bayonet, so he designed this knife and said it was for the Whitneyville Plymouth rifle. In fact, they do not fit these rifles very well, and were never intended to be used as a bayonet. They are much too heavy. This knife is in fine condition. The blade remains bright, but was sharpened at least once. It is marked on the right ricasso with: "U.S.N.' over "D.R" over "1863". The left ricasso is marked "AMES MFG. CO." over "CHICOPEE" over "MASS.". The walnut grip is very fine and the brass has a nice yellow bronze patina. The scabbard and frog are black leather. They are in fine condition. There is a little surface cracking on the surface of the scabbard. The brass tip has a nice bronze patina. The red felt lining of the throat is a bit tattered. The frog is stenciled on the back with "U.S.N.Y." over "BOSTON" over "1864". This is a great Civil War artifact of the Boston Naval Yard.
