Item No.: 7621 Price : $2,495.00
Item : RARE, U.S. MODEL 1814 FLINTLOCK "COMMON" RIFLE
Description :
This is a rare, U.S. Model 1814 Flintlock Rifle manufactured by Richard Johnson of Middletown, Ct. The Model 1814 rifle was an improved version of the Model 1803 rifle. It eliminated the heavy iron under rib and strengthened the stock, extending it from half to full length. The brass patch box was replaced with an oval one of sheet iron. These rifles were made in very small numbers. Deringer of Philadelphia and Johnson were each contracted to produce 2000 of these rifles. Actual production is believed to be far less than that, making it a very scarce U.S. martial arm. The Model 1814 Rifle had a 33 1/2" octagon to round barrel of .54 caliber. This rifle is in fine overall condition, but it has had some professional restoration done. It has been re-converted to flintlock and some of the small lock parts are reproductions. The barrel has been re-lined and rifled to .54 caliber. This work was done to return the rifle to its "as built" configuration. With an arm of this scarcity, few remain in original condition. The metal has an overall dark brown patina. The stock is a deep , even walnut color. The lock works well and , of course, the rifling is excellent. This rifle displays beautifully and would fill an important niche in any collection of U.S. Military long arms.
